NEW HOLLAND DURADISC™ 280
Mr. Tom McSweeney is farming 80 acres of land in Aherla, Co. Cork which has been in the family for over 200 years. Tom has 30 acres of tillage along with 30 suckler cows on the farm. Tom purchased a New Holland DuraDisc™ 280, 2.8m (9ft) side mounted non-conditioning mower through his local dealer Mc and S Agri Sales, it was an easy decision for Tom based on high quality products, backup and support over the years. Throughout the 2019 season the mower has cut approximately 150 acres.
“It is an easy driven mower” explained Tom. This mower is often known as the economy version. This mower is well suited to small tractors running on lower horsepower.
The New Holland tractors with 540E/PTO speed allow this mower to be operated with lower engine speed thereby reducing fuel consumption.
The mower is designed to follow ground contours as it benefits from a mechanical flotation system. “On the first day out with the mower I cut hybrid grass. Normally this is a tough crop to cut but the mower flew through it, I even got off to check if it was cut as some was lodged and it was cut clean!” Tom explains. Another benefit of the mower is the full width wear plates. This protects the cutterbar and distributes the ground pressure evenly across the full cutting width, reducing stubble damage and aids quicker regrowth. The easy lift headstock system both protects the PTO shaft and allows the mower to clear large swaths. This is achieved by the specially designed geometry of the headstock which incorporates two hydraulic cylinders which maintains a straight PTO drive and excellent ground clearance without the operation of the 3 point linkage. Tom has been impressed with how the season has gone using the DuraDisc™ 280 mower “I didn’t have to get off the tractor all year” says Tom.
Tom is impressed with the transport of his mower describing that it “folds nicely and is compact for transport”. Tom commented “it is very neat on the road especially
when going through busy towns like Douglas”.
